MAP

Northside Community Recreation Centre

The Northside Community Recreation Centre (Historic Lund School) still bears some resemblance to its former incarnation as the Lund Elementary School.

The largest classroom is now available as a large multi-purpose room, while the smaller classroom has been divided into an office, library and dedicated Preschool room.

A hallway separates the licensed kitchen from these rooms.  A small room is adjacent to the kitchen, separated by a serving counter with privacy blind and a dutch-style door. The building has two washrooms with two stalls each.

There is a playground with equipment suitable for young children, as well as a playing field and a covered outside area.

Proposed New Building

The qRD applied for a $4.2 million Canada Infrastructure Grant in early 2021, a community improvement under the Rural & Northern Community Infrastructure Grant. The grant was approved, 73% of the project costs in mid 2022, subject to qRD borrowing up to $1.1 million, impacting local taxes.

January to March 2023 the qRD Alternative Process failed to approve this borrowing, to enable project work to commence by mid April 2023, a conditional the grant.

So now we move into a referendum, a vote to take place within 80 days of March 6th, actual date yet to be determined.

We have received 3 generous community donations, totalling $115,000 that effectively reduces the amount of required borrow.

The grant funds cannot be used for other projects, if we vote to not proceed, the funds are returned to the Fed/Prov and will be allocated to another community.

Lund Water and parking are recognized issues of concern to the Lund community, they are separate funds and projects to this new building addition.

Following the financing approvals, expect now in May 2023, a community engagement process will be part of the final design studies prior to any construction.

The only upgrades to the existing building are an upgrade and slight expansion to the kitchen to meet commercial kitchen standards and a linking entryway to the new building. Possibly a two year timeframe until completed. The finished multi-purpose space is hoped to replace the much loved and missed Lund Hall, serving all residents of qRD Area A, the Northside Recreation area, north of Powell RIver and Wildwood.
